It is scorching hot this July.
We got up before sunrise to visit Polegreen Church before the day heated up too much. We were the only ones there.
This is an important site in US history. It is relevant to revolutionary and civil war history and is key to the establishment of religious liberty.
The colony of Virginia was established as Anglican or Church of England. Presbyterians built a reading room on the Polegreen property and then eventually a church counter to the establishment. This was an important place where religious liberty was discussed in the developing country.
This was where Patrick Henry attended church growing up and learned his oratorial style which fed his Give me Liberty or Give me Death rhetoric.
Eventually the church burned down when Union sharp shooters took shelter there and Confederate artillery bombed them out.
Today it is called the Ghost Church because it wasn't rebuilt but they made a steel structure to outline the building based on the foundation and some sketches from a union soldier.
